10. Conflict, Repair & Relationship Maintenance

Overview

Conflict is an inevitable part of any long-term relationship. The defining factor of relationship longevity is not the absence of disagreements, but the ability to make effective repair attempts, maintain positive interactions, and rebuild trust.

1. Gottman’s Conflict & Maintenance Principles

Based on observational research by Dr. John Gottman (The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work):

1.1 The 5:1 Positive Interaction Ratio

Stable relationships maintain at least 5 positive interactions for every 1 negative interaction during conflict resolution.

  • Positive Micro-Interactions: Expressions of appreciation, humor, active listening, gentle touch, and validation.

1.2 The Role of Repair Attempts

A repair attempt is any statement or action—verbal or non-verbal—that prevents emotional escalation during a disagreement:

  • "I'm feeling defensive right now. Can we take a step back?"
  • Using humor or offering a physical gesture of warmth.
  • Validating the partner's perspective: "I see why you're upset about that."

2. Effective Apologies & Rebuilding Trust

  • Anatomy of a Genuine Apology:
  • Expressing sincere regret.
  • Accepting responsibility without defensive excuses ("I was wrong to say that").
  • Offering a clear plan for changed behavior.
  • Asking for forgiveness without demanding immediate reconciliation.

3. When Couples Therapy Helps

Consider consulting a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) or Gottman-trained counselor when: * Disagreements turn into chronic gridlock. * Communication breaks down into criticism, contempt, defensiveness, or stonewalling (Gottman's "Four Horsemen"). * Rebuilding after a major breach of trust.
